The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned its hearing in the Babri Masjid case to February 8, 2018. However, a statement made by Congress leader and senior lawyer Kapil Sibal on behalf of the Sunni Waqf Board with regards to the case kicked up a political storm.
During the hearing, Kapil Sibal urged the Supreme Court to take up the Babri Masjid case in July 2019, after the Lok Sabha elections.
“Ram Mandir is a very serious litigation, SC should consider hearing it after July 15, 2019. We all know what’s happening here will have huge ramifications outside & in the polity of this country”
Debating on Republic TV, Illyas Sarafuddin spoke in support of Kapil Sibal. He said:
"As per the constitution, a lawyer has every right to make his point in Court."
A few minutes later, Republic TV's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami joined the debate and grilled Illyas Sarafuddin for supporting Kapil Sibal. Replying to Arnab, Sarafuddin said:
"Kapil Sibal wants the documents to be verified and cross-examined, all that takes a lot of time"
