Rajinikanth has just done the unthinkable. No I'm not talking about the fact that he has launched a new film instead of a new political party.  This is not about Kalanithi Maran & Sun Pictures, who are bankrolling this new film.  This is about the guy who Rajinikanth has chosen to direct the film.

Karthik Subbaraj.

I know many of you have no clue who this guy is. I also know that some of you know who the guy and loved all the three films he has made. A 35-year old Madurai guy, from the software industry, who first got rejected in a TV reality show for short films.

He went on to make a Tamil feature film exactly about his life called 'Jigarthanda'. The film revolves around a young & aspiring filmmaker who gets thrown out of a TV reality show. How the lead ends up making his first film, casting a gangster as its hero forms the plot of the movie. Guess what the name of the protagonist was? Karthik.

A super-stylish gangster flick that morphs into a dark comedy, it released to a rapturous response from the critics and audience alike. IMHO, it's one of the best Tamil films of the last decade. One of the definitive films of the Tamil New Wave Cinema, that oozed coolth.

A satire on Cinema and Society, praise came in from none other than Mani Ratnam. And now...He will be saying lights, camera, action to Rajini!

(This article should really have been titled The Fantastic Case of Karthik Subbaraj)

Rajini has shown his willingness to experiment after a long long time, when he chose the young and upcoming PA Ranjith for Kabali. Although it ended up with mixed reactions it was enough to get Ranjith another film with Rajini, the soon to-be-released 'Kaala'.  Karthik, in that sense, is second-in-line to direct his own matinee idol.

Neither of them were born when Rajini made his film debut in 1975.

Back then, Rajini was not the conventional larger-than-life hero he became over the last couple of decades. Fresh out of the Madras Film Institute, he gained attention playing villainous roles and worked in small experimental films.

Even as Rajini, the politican, starts out...Rajini, the actor, seems to be making a comeback. And his collaboration with Karthik makes for exciting cinematic possibilities.

So what, if Ranjith didn't quite hit the mark cinematically? What if Karthik does?

What if, Karthik ends up making a film about a movie superstar who decides to enter Politics?

Hope springs eternal
