Republic TV’s executive editor Abhishek Kapoor explains the Gujarat Elections Geography.
The Geography of the state of Gujarat from the perspective of Electoral politics is described by Republic TV’s executive editor Abhishek Kapoor. Gujarat is divided into 4 parts: North, Central, South, and the Saurashtra-Kutch region.
The Saurashtra-Kutch Peninsula has 54 seats which are the largest number of seats any region has. This is because Kutch by itself accounts for 1/4th the size of Gujarat (geographically) and has 6 Assembly seats. Whereas, Saurashtra the remaining 48 seats.
North Gujarat is electorally the 2nd largest with 53 seats followed by Central and South Gujarat region with 40 seats and 28 seats respectively.
The Saurashtra-Kutch region is dominated by the Patidar community or the Patels as they are called in Gujarat, and the Koli community who are OBC’s which is the community that Hardik Patel is trying to woo. The Kshatriya or Rajput community commonly called ‘The Darbars’ are the third most dominant in this region. North & Central Gujarat together form the ‘KHAM Belt’ - Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, Muslim belt.
