A full two days after his Congress party was utterly routed in Nagaland and Tripura and one day after it was outmanoeuvred in the process of government formation in Meghalaya despite emerging the biggest party in the elections, Rahul Gandhi has offered his reaction.

Taking to Twitter, the Congress president has written:

"The Congress party respects the mandate of the people of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

We are committed to strengthening our party across the North East and to winning back the trust of the people.

My sincere thanks to each and every Congress worker who toiled for the party."

About four hours later, he also offered his assessment of the events in Meghalaya, where his top leaders Ahmed Patel, CP Joshi and Kamal Nath failed to convince regional parties to enter into an alliance, and NPP's Conrad Sangma is to form a NDA government on Tuesday:

"With just 2 seats, the BJP has usurped power in Meghalaya, through a proxy.

Like in Manipur & Goa, showing utter disregard for the mandate of the people. Obsessed instead with grabbing power, using big money to create an opportunistic alliance.

#DemocracyDemonetised"

Rahul Gandhi's mentions of Manipur and Goa refer to the events following the assembly elections in those states last year, when the Congress had similarly failed to form a government despite winning the most seats.

While speaking to Republic TV in Shillong on the day of the election results, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel had said that there would be no repeat of Goa and Manipur. Later, another Congress leader, Mukul Wasnik was photographed holding what looked like the Congress' 'alliance sheet' containing electoral equations. Subsequently, the Congress leaders went to the Governor to lay claim to forming a government but were unsuccessful.

Speaking to Republic TV after Conrad Sangma's triumph, influential NADA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma had called Rahul Gandhi's move to sent senior leaders to Meghalaya "immature", saying the leaders had been humiliated as Rahul knew that the numbers were not in the Congress' favour.

Rahul Gandhi was missing during the entire election results drama as he had gone to Italy to visit his Grandmother. His being incommunicado in the aftermath of yet another election defeat didn't go unnoticed, even among his opponents. While addressing a victory news conference BJP party president Amit Shah engaged in banter with mediapersons, making a barely-disguised reference to the elections that were conducted in Italy on Sunday.
