Deputy Inspector General of Police (Prisons) D. Roopa who attempted to expose the VIP treatment given to prisoners at Parappana Agrahara prison in Bengaluru was transferred to 'Traffic and Road Safety' on Monday.

Stunning claims made by DIG Prisons, Karnataka, D. Roopa in a report accessed exclusively by Republic World suggest that AIADMK interim general secretary Sasikala was being given special privileges in Bengaluru central jail where she is currently serving a 4-year jail sentence.

The 10-page report, that Republic World has accessed, has indicated that a special kitchen has been built for Sasikala, a high-profile prisoner of Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Jail since February, 2017. It also accuses top prison officials of being well aware of the violations and deliberately ignoring them in lieu of financial incentives.

When contacted, D. Roopa, DIG Prisons, confirmed sending the report to Director General (Prisons) H.N. Satyanarayana Rao. 'I have written all details in the report.  I hope action will be taken as per the law', she told Republic World, refusing to comment further.

Sources tell Republic World that a copy of the letter for information has also been marked to DGP, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary of Home Department, Principal Secretary of Home Department and the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Karnataka.

Reactions to the development

Refraining from commenting on the transfer of Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) D. Roopa over a report stating about the irregularities going on in the central prison, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said it is not necessary to disclose everything to media. "It is an administrative process; it is not necessary to disclose everything to the media," Siddaramaiah said.

On the other hand, state Law Minister T.B. Jayachandran said he is not aware about the transfer, adding that whosoever is wrong will face the consequences. "I don't know whether they are transferred or not, but a probe has been ordered. Let there be an inquiry and let the report come, and whoever, whether the DIG or DGP, has crossed the limit will face the consequences," he said.

On July 14, Roopa had said she was being unnecessarily targetted and singled out for exposing irregularities at the Parappana Agrahara Central prison.
