The Supreme Court on Friday delivered a verdict in the long-standing Cauvery dispute, ordering Karnataka to release 177.25 thousand million cubic feet (tmc) of water to Tamil Nadu.

This entailed a 14.75 tmc reduction of water to Tamil Nadu on account of 10 tmc underground water being available and the drinking water requirement for Bengaluru.

Karnataka will get 285 tmc due to Bengaluru being a global city, the apex court said.

Here's how the verdict compares with what the states had wanted:

Total Water: 740 tmc

Karnataka: 284 tmc (had wanted 323 tmc)

Tamil Nadu: 414.25 tmc, of which Karnataka will release 177.25 tmc (vs its expectation of 192 tmc)

Kerala: 30 TMC

Pondicherry: 7 TMC

The Supreme Court allowed Tamil Nadu to draw additional 10 TMC feet 'groundwater' from total of 20 TMC feet beneath Cauvery basin.

Karnataka will get an enhanced 14.75 TMC feet water which will be above 2007 tribunal award of 270 TMC feet.

The SC says the tribunal drastically reduced the amount of water to Karnataka. The top court said increase in Cauvery water share for Karnataka is on account of groundwater and drinking water requirement for Bengaluru residents.

Agreements of 1892 and 1924 are in force that cover larger public interest. Karnataka chose to not denounce the agreements, the apex court said.

Karnataka will get 285 TMC due to Bengaluru being a global city, added the top court.

Bengaluru will also receive an additional 4.7 TMC of water, the SC said.

SC said the 2007 tribunal award of 30 tmc feet to Kerala and 7 tmc feet to Puducherry will remain unchanged.

The top court said its order on Cauvery water allocation will continue for the next 15 years.
