The bizarre row over beef cutlets at Cochin University College of Engineering continued to unfold on Wednesday after clashes broke out between two groups of agitating students. While students from other states attempted to disrupt classes, local students blocked the move, which resulted in an altercation.
A few students have suffered minor injuries during the course of the clash.
Last week, reports surfaced that a group of vegetarian students complained to the district authorities that they were made to eat beef cutlets served as a vegetable dish. At a private seminar on digital banking, which was taking place on campus, students were served snacks along with tea. Reports suggest that the organisers had clearly indicated that both vegetarian and non-vegetarian cutlets were on offer.
However, some of the students allegedly ate the beef cutlets and later claimed that the college authorities had served beef cutlets in the guise of vegetarian ones to hurt their religious sentiments.
While the university has set-up a committee to look into the situation, sources tell Republic TV that the students - mostly from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal - got confused with beef cutlets and consumed them thinking that they are vegetable cutlets.
