Former Director General of Police (DGP) (Prisons), Karnataka, HN Sathyanarayana Rao has served a notice to former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), D Roopa.

The notice, dated July 16, 2017, issued by Rao's lawyer on his behalf, focuses on the allegations made by former DIG Roopa against Rao and claims that DIG Roopa tried to "damage the integrity and reputation of Sathyanarayan Rao."

“I demand you to tender unconditional apology to my client giving the same wide publicity in the same manner your allegations against him has so far received,” Rao's notice read.

DIG Rao has also asked Roopa to tender an unconditional apology within three days failing which he will file criminal and civil suits for defamation, for Rs 50 crore.

Earlier in a report accessed exclusively by Republic World, Roopa had suggest that VK Sasikala, the close aide of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, was given special privileges in Bengaluru central jail where she is currently serving a 4-year jail sentence after being convicted in a disproportionate assets case.

In the seven page report, DIG Rao had denied all allegations made by Roopa. He further alleged that Roopa made the accusations with a view to get “cheap publicity” and that “publicity was sought at the cost of others.” He also questioned why she did not take an image of the special treatment she had accused the Bengaluru prison of.

“You have harped upon a convict getting a VIP treatment such as setting up of kitchen in her own cell so as to get special food. When you could take snaps elsewhere within the prison premises, it is astonishing that how you missed to take photo of such highly objectionable thing. The reason is obvious that you could not take photo of a non-existant kitchen and in the second part of your story you have now said that evidence are eraced” Rao's notice read.

Special treatment in jail?

The 10-page report, that republicworld.com had accessed, had indicated that a special kitchen has been built for Sasikala, a high profile prisoner of Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Jail since February, 2017. It had also accused top prison officials of being well aware of the violations and deliberately ignoring them in lieu of financial incentives.
