Moments after the Prime Minister broke his silence on the Unnao and Kathua rapes, the two Jammu and Kashmir ministers, Lal Singh and Chandra Prakash Ganga, who had attended the pro-rapist rally held by fringe groups including the Hindu Ekta Manch have resigned from the Mehbooba Mufti-led government. Both ministers were reportedly at the rally that built a beeline defence for the rape accused of the 8-year-old victim in the Kathua rape case.

Pressure has been building upon the BJP and the PDP to sack the ministers who were caught on tape trying to whip up 'Hindu unity' in the aftermath of the rape while allegedly trying to distance the key accused SPO in the case from the horrific crime.

An 8-year-old was kidnapped, sedated, gang raped and murdered in January. A chargesheet against the accused was filed this Monday revealing the horrific details of the crime which triggered a wave of outrage across the country.

Speaking to Republic TV on Friday, Lal Singh, one of the ministers who has now resigned, had admitted to being at the pro-rapist rally and supporting their demand for a CBI probe. He forwarded the demand to chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who turned it down.

Earlier, a Hindu Ekta Manch leader had revealed that two former Congress lawmakers had also supported the group's demand. A clandestine meeting with BJP and Congress leaders had been held at a temple to this effect. Further, a statement issued by the Congress J&K chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir backed the accused in the case and alleged that the real culprits had been shielded for political reasons. While Mir has attempted to re-interpret his own remarks, no statement about the Congress' involvement has been issued by the party's hierarchy.

The Prime Minister's strong statement also came just about 24 hours after the CBI took over the Unnao rape case and subsequently arrested and questioned the rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar
