On the first day of Phase-I of the Gujarat elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally started off with a massive turnout at Lunawada, Gujarat.
The Congress party has over the years hurled several abuses and personal attacks at Narendra Modi, something he highlighted at a poll rally on Friday as he named and shamed the leaders in question. Some of the personal attacks have been aimed at his modest background. Cast in point, after already having made a 'Chaiwala' attack at the PM before the 2014 elections, Mani Shankar Aiyar on Thursday launched another personal attack at Narendra Modi, this time on the eve of Gujarat 2017. Aiyar said:
“ I feel that this man (PM Modi) is a very lowly (Neech) and degenerate person. On an occasion like this, what is the need for this dirty politics?”
The attack on PM Modi’s humble background by the Congress did not stop there. Salman Nizami, a Youth Leader for the Congress party posted a Tweet stating that Rahul Gandhi’s forebears Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru have all fought for India’s independence. He then asked: “Narendra Modi son of…..? Grandson of….? Sacrifice….?”
Narendra Modi did not let this go! In his rally in Lunawada, Gujarat, on Saturday he responded to this rather nasty Tweet mocking his modest background. He said nobody speaks to their biggest enemies using this sort of language! He said “ I want to tell all Congress leaders who are abusing me, mocking my poor family, asking who my parents are.. I want to tell them.. ”
“This country is my mother and and this country is also my father. This nation is my everything. Every moment of my time is devoted to India and 125 crore Indians,"
The BJP has been staunch in its counterattack against the Congress' jibes. Party spokesperson Dr Sambit Patra also said that Prime Minister Modi was the son of India and that the Congress Party was trying to insult the son of the soil.
