Merely a few days after the controversial gag order, another bill of the Raje government has come into a controversy. Rajasthan is currently in the midst of introducing a Religious Freedom Bill which aims at putting a check on forceful religious conversions being reported from various parts of the state and assist the police establishment in maintaining law and order in the region.

While BJP ministers continue to support the Bill by stating that it ensures that forceful change of religion does not take place, legal experts argue that the Bill is unconstitutional and add that it goes against the freedom of religion.

Rajasthan Congress Chief, Sachin Pilot said,

“When governance and performance fails and promises are proved to be false, people turn to religion. There must be a reason why only a few months before the elections, such orders are being put in place. Will have to see what is written in the Bill. I do understand that in the name of religion if there any disputes, the government and the public must work together. But since the government has failed at every point, then at the end they hide behind religion.”

The Bill, called Rajasthan Dharma Swatantrya Bill, 2008, is currently under the consideration of the Union home ministry. The Religious Freedom Bill aimed at banning forcible religious conversions will help maintain law and order, Rajasthan minister Gulab Chand Kataria said.
