'One Nation One Election' Against Basic Structure, Dissolve Committee, Says Mallikarjun Kharge

The Congress is strongly opposed to the idea of 'One Nation, One Election', said Kharge, urging President Ramnath Kovind to dissolve the committee.

New Delhi: Congress on Friday strongly opposed idea of holding simultaneous elections in country and said it goes against guarantees of federalism and basic structure of Constitution. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge party also demanded that idea be abandoned and high-powered committee formed in this regard be dissolved.

In a letter to secretary of committee on one nation, one election, he requested former President Ram Nath Kovind, who hes panel, t to allow his persona and office of former president to be "abused" by central government to "subvert" Constitution and Parliamentary democracy.

" Indian National Congress is strongly opposed to very idea of 'One Nation, One Election'. For sake of maintaining a thriving and a robust democracy, it is imperative that entire idea must be abandoned and high-powered committee dissolved," Kharge said in his letter to Niten Chandra, secretary of committee.

"On behalf of Congress party and people of country, I humbly request Chairman of high-level committee t to allow his persona and office of former president of India to be abused by Union government to subvert constitution and parliamentary democracy in this country," Kharge said in his letter.

His letter came in response to Chandra's letter of October 18 where he h invited suggestions for consideration of high level committee consituted by government for purpose of one nation, one election.

" government, parliament and ECI should work toger to ensure people's mandate is respected rar than divert people's attention by talking about undemocratic ideas like simultaneous elections," Kharge said.
