Volvo has unveiled the second generation of S60 that is set to hit the Indian markets soon after it is launched internationally. The second generation Volvo would be the first ever Volvo that would be manufactured in America.

Volvo had announced the idea of scraping diesel engines from its lineup earlier this year and achieving complete electrification of all its models by 2019. Thus the new S60 will be offered in four variants of Petrol engines including two hybrids.

The Scandinavian craftwork defined as a wolf in sheep’s cloth sports the pure-petrol T6 unit that delivers a massive power of 340 bhp with AWD setup, while the 2.0-litre turbocharged T5 unit delivers 299 bhp.

The hybrid unit of T8 provided in the S60 has a 2.0-litre petrol engine and is mated to 65 kW electric motor that puts out a power of 299 bhp on the road. Tagged as the most powerful hybrid by Volvo, the other T8 will be co-developed by Polestar that would put out a combined power of 499 bhp.

The new S60 is based on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform which underpins its elder sibling V60 which was launched earlier this year as well as Volvo's top-spec SUV, XC60.

The car also comes with an optional Pilot Assist system which can completely take control of the steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads up to a speed of 130 kmph. Volvo has incorporated plenty of safety measures in the car. The steering alone in the car comes with a Run-off-Road Mitigation and Oncoming Lane Mitigation system that handles the sudden change in direction efficiently.

The price tag on the car has not yet been revealed by the company. Meanwhile, it is known that the car will enter India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Depending on the demand in the country, Volvo might later assemble it in India.

The new S60 will be the first Volvo car sold without a diesel offering which might signal at the company's future plans of electrifying its lineup.

“The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we’ve ever made,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “It is a true driver’s car that gives us a strong position in the US and China sedan markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars.”
