Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's announcements come at a time when India has established itself as an electronics powerhouse in the world.

In the first budget of Amrit Kal, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a slew of announcements which will make certain goods cheaper while others shall get expensive. The government cut the customs duty on parts of television panels to 2.5 percent whereas the budget proposed to reduce customs duty on the import of certain inputs for mobile phone manufacturing.

Sitharaman said the centre would continue with a concessional basic customs duty of 2.5 percent on copper scrap. The finance minister also hiked basic customs duty on articles made from gold bars while raising the tax on cigarettes by 16 percent. The government would also reduce customs duty on shrimp feed to promote exports, the FM announced.

The announcements come at a time when India has established itself as an electronics powerhouse in the world. It should be noted that India is the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturer.

Here's what will become cheaper:

  • Parts of television panels
  • Lithium-ion batteries
  • Acid-grade fluorspar
  • Denatured ethyl alcohol
  • Seeds for use in the manufacturing of rough lab-grown diamonds
  • Camera lens and its inputs/parts for use in the manufacture of the camera modules of cellular mobile phone

Here's what will become expensive:

  • Articles made of gold, silver and platinum
  • Imitation Jewellery
  • Copper scrap
  • Ciggaretes
  • Imported vehicle in Completely Built Unit (CBU) form, other than with CIF more than USD 40,000 or with engine capacity of more than 3000 cc for petrol-run vehicles and more than 2500 cc for diesel-run vehicles, or with both
  • Imported electrically operated Vehicle in Completely Built Unit (CBU) form, other than with CIF value of more than USD 40,000 
  • Imported vehicle (including electric vehicles) in Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) form. 
  • Imported toys and parts of toys (other than parts of electronic toys) 
  • Imported bicycles
  • Electric Kitchen Chimney
