Stocks fell sharply on Wall Street Wednesday as more signs piled up of the economic and physical pain being caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

The S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq all dropped 4.4% after the White House said that 100,000 to 240,000 people in the U.S. could die from COVID-19.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially the elderly and people with preexisting health conditions, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
