From Stephen's College to Oxford University: Educational Qualifications of Delhi's New CM Atishi

New Delhi: Atishi Marlena Singh will become the next Chief Minister of Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal , the current CM of Delhi proposed her name for the post of CM as he has announced to resign today, September 17. As the third woman to hold the position, she follows in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit, who left lasting legacies during their respective tenures. Atishi, currently representing Kalkaji in the Delhi Assembly, has been a close ally of Aam Aadmi Party leader and outgoing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Let's take a look at her educational qualifications.
Educational Qualifications of Delhi New CM Atishi
- She did her schooling from Springdales School in Delhi.
- She then did graduation from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University. As per reports, she was the university topper.
- She then moved to Oxford University to pursue a master's degree in History on a Chevening scholarship, in the year 2003.
- She then bagged a Rhodes Scholarship to earn her second master's degree from Oxford University in educational research.
- Atishi also worked as a teacher before joining politics. She used to teach politics, history and English subjects at Rishi Valley School, Andhra Pradesh.
Moreover, she spent several years in a small village in Madhya Pradesh where she got involved in organic farming and boosting the education system. She was associated with several non-profit organisations there. She met some AAP members there for the first time after which she joined the party.
Atishi's Political Career
- Atishi joined Aam Aadmi Party in 2013.
- She was appointed as an advisor to education minister Manish Sisodia in 2015. She played a crucial role in shaping the policies for party as well as education system of Delhi.
- She suggested to launch initiatives like ‘Happiness Curriculum’ which was lauded by many countries. She also launched ‘Entrepreneurship Mindset Curriculum’ for students.
- In 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, she lost to BJP 's Gautam Gambhir from East Delhi seat.
- She latest contested from Kalkaji constituency in the 2020 Delhi assembly elections and won.
After Manish Sisodia was jailed, Atishi was given the responsibility to handle the education ministry. She has handled the most number of ministries- 14. Key ministries under her are education, finance, planning, PWD, water, power and public relations.
