IMPACT: Arunachal Pradesh Catholic Association withdraws prayer petition supporting Congress' Nabam Tuki with 'immediate effect', issues apology to EC and public

In a massive impact of Republic TV's newsbreak, Arunachal Pradesh Catholic Association (APCA) on Sunday withdrew the 'prayer petition' in which they had urged the Catholics in the state to vote for Congress candidate Nabam Tuki.

In a massive impact of Republic TV's newsbreak, Arunachal Pradesh Catholic Association (APCA) on Sunday withdrew the 'prayer petition' in which they had urged the Catholics in the state to vote for Congress candidate Nabam Tuki. Furthermore, the association also issued an apology to the CEO and the public of the state over the controversy. 

Replying to the show cause notice by Election Commission, Pekhi Nabum, the secretary general of APCA said that the association's intention was not to campaign in favour of Nabum Taki. Adding that the real intention was 'peaceful conduct of the election', he further asserted that the petition stands withdrawn with immediate effect.

"The said prayer petition is hereby stands withdrawn with immediate effect," read the letter dated April 7.

In a major violation of the election model of code of conduct, APCA released a prayer petition in favour of Congress candidate and former Arunachal Pradesh CM Nabam Tuki, who is set to contest the 2019 polls from contesting from Arunachal West parliamentary constituency. 

The petition regarded the Congress leader as ' the pillar of the Catholic church' in the state. In the petition, the church assoication went on to request all the Catholic voters to vote for him.

Earlier in March, a similar controversy raked up in the state when the Arunachal Pradesh Christian Revival Church Council (APCRCC) had issued an order in support of NPP candidate Kyoda Apik. The order urged the APCRCC, entire Christian community and all the concerned district Councils to vote for Kyoda Apik.

Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh is set to go into Lok Sabha and assembly elections starting from April 11.
