The seat in Assam which is a Muslim majority had been a Congress bastion till the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. In 2019, the contest was between AIUDF’s  Ajmal and Congress’ Wazed Ali Choudhury. Other key candidates from the party are Zabed Islam of AGP, Abu Taher Bepari of Congress and Nurul Islam Choudhury of Trinamool.

Ajmal won a comfortable victory by defeating Congress' Choudhary by a huge margin.

Congress had won in Assam since 1957 for eight times in the last thirteen years. However, 68-year-old perfume baron's AIUDF ate into the Congress vote share of immigrant Muslim electorate in this seat.

Dhubri went to polls in the third phase of voting on April 23. It consists of 10 assembly segments: Mankachar, Salmara South, Dhubri, Gauripur, Golakganj, Bilasipara West, Bilasipara East, Goalpara East, Goalpara West and Jaleswar.

Ajmal had made headlines in this poll season for his controversial conduct. The politician was in news for threatening a journalist and for making shocking comments against his opponents.

He was caught on camera hurling abuses, attacking and threatening a journalist when asked if he will join the 'Mahagathbandhan'.

The incident was reported from Mankachar, where Ajmal was holding a press conference. When the reporter questioned him whether he will join the Mahagathbandhan in the state as well at the Centre, the AIUDF chief got angry and misbehaved with the journalist.

Ajmal had also attacked the Prime Minister's origins on Saturday saying that PM Modi should go and sell tea and pakodas. "All the Opposition alliances against Modi of which we are a part will remove him out of this country. He will then go somewhere and open a tea stall and will sell pakodas too," he said to reporters.
