In a major breach of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in the state of Assam, five schools are in the dock for sending their students to Congress president Rahul Gandhi's recent election rally in the state.

Taking cognisance of the event, the school administrations have been issued show cause notices and have been asked to reply within 24 hours, failing which strict action may be initiated against them.

The district election officer (DEO) Keerthi Jalli of Hailakandi said that the schools had sent their students to Congress president Rahul Gandhi's rally at Panchgram on Tuesday.

The heads of Adarsha Vidyalaya, Panchgram Quomi Madrassa, Moulana Abdul Ali Memorial Jaliliya Madrassa, Oxford High School and Cambridge High School - all situated at Panchgram - were the ones to get the notices on Wednesday, an official release said.

Investigating on the matter of why a large number of students in uniform were present at the Congress rally at Intake Field in Panchgram, DC Jalli, found out that the school administration had sent the students to the rally.

In the notices to the schools, the DEO said, "You have insulted your position as an educator, the noblest of professions" and proceeded to ask the heads of the educational institutions as to why immediate action should not taken in the issue. The schools were informed that they had violated the MCC and Representation of People's Act, 1951, because of which actions including cancellation of certification and permission to run the schools can also be taken against them.

On Tuesday, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had addressed a public meeting in Hailakandi, where he had attacked PM Modi saying: "your 'chowkidar' is not only a 'thief', but also a 'coward' as he avoids having a direct debate with the opposition party chief."

In Assam, polling has been held on Thursday in the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls for Lakhimpur, Tezpur, Kaliabor, Dibrugarh and Jorhat constituencies.
