BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dr Subramanian Swamy has given his verdict on the ongoing critical assembly elections.

Taking to Twitter, Dr Swamy has opined that his party, the BJP, will retain all three central Hindi heartland states that are going to polls, viz. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

He also says that in the other two states, Telangana and Mizoram, where the TRS and Congress respectively are in power, the BJP will make substantial gains. In Telangana, Dr Swamy says that the BJP will improve from 5 seats to 30 in the 119-member assembly, while in Mizoram, it would do one better by forming a coalition government, making it a part of the establishment in virtually all the north-east states.

In his reasoning, the MP credits three reasons - Hindutva, better anti-corruption record and the Prime Minister's microeconomic schemes, such as the Ujjwala Yojana.

Voting in three of five states has concluded, with Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram going to polls on Wednesday. Madhya Pradesh, where BJP's Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been Chief Minister for 13 years, saw a high 75% voter turnout. The Chhattisgarh elections had concluded earlier, having been conducted in two phases, while elections in Rajasthan and Telangana are scheduled to be held on December 7, with counting scheduled for all five states on December 11.

The elections present a chance for the Congress to make inroads into the BJP's bastions. Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have long had BJP governments, and Vasundhara Raje is the CM of Rajasthan. In Telangana too, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday held a rally with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Sonia Gandhi had addressed a rally there a week earlier. In its attacks, the Congress has hit out at Telangana CM KCR, accusing him of working to enrich his own family, rather than the people of the state. Sonia Gandhi even went so far as to refer to herself as the state's 'mother' and credited former PM Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi and herself for the 'difficult decision' to carve it out of Andhra Pradesh
