With the country headed to the third phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019, five seats, namely Araria, Jhanjharpur, Khagaria, Madhepura and Supaul in Bihar are in poll fray. Amongst them, the Madhepura seat is witnessing a three-cornered fight with all the Yadav candidates contesting for the seat.
Sharad Yadav who won the Lok Sabha seat of Madhepura four times - in 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2009 has said that he is not only confident about his win but also the Mahagathbandhan's victory. In 2014, Pappu Yadav defeated Sharad Yadav, who contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 on a JD(U) ticket. He (Sharad Yadav) later turned a rebel after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar went back to NDA and is now contesting on an RJD ticket.
Sharad Yadav made a scathing attack on Prime Minister Modi and the BJP, saying:
"BJP is talking about nationalism. It is fake nationalism. Nationalism is in how farmer's income will increase, nationalism is how poor's life will change, it will come when unemployed will be employed. Industrial growth is nationalism. Country's development is written in Constitution, whatever he (PM Narendra Modi) has done, has done above it. PM Modi will face defeat. He has spent five years on non-issues. Those issues that were not important, like cow, cow has been here since thousand yeas there was no danger on it, go to Delhi and around, you will see that farmers are staying awake at night due to cows. Cows are destroying farmers crops. All institutions have been destroyed under him."
On being asked if this was the case earlier when he was the convenor in the JD(U)-BJP NDA government, he said:
"That time (Atal Bihari Vajpayee's reign) everything was in limits. Atal-Advani government was balanced. this government has only one goal - Hindu-Muslim. Their mind is communal, everywhere we will win, one or two places can be a mistake, rest everywhere we will win."
Madhepura is witnessing an interesting contest this year. Pappu Yadav won in 2014 on an RJD ticket from here, but was thrown out of the RJD by Lalu Yadav, and later formed his own party - Jan Adhikar party. Sharad Yadav is now RJD's candidate from Madhepura who fought on JD(U) ticket in 2014. JD(U) candidate from Madhepura in 2019 is Dinesh Yadav.
Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 40 parliamentary constituencies in Bihar and is polling in the third phase of the general elections on April 23. Madhepura parliamentary constituency is made of six assembly constituencies with three each from Madhepura and Saharsa district. The constituency is made up of six Assembly constituencies - Madhepura district's Alamnagar, Bihariganj and Madhepura constituencies and Saharsa district's Sonbarsha, Saharsa and Mahishi constituencies.
While Janata Dal (United) is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which comprises of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Bihar Mahagathbandhan comprises Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) and Vikasshil Insan Party (VIP).
