In an exclusive interview with Republic TV, Congress candidate for Bihar's Patna Sahib constituency Shatrughan Sinha spoke on an array of issues including about his choice of Prime Ministerial candidate and why his wife Poonam Sinha chose to contest from Lucknow on Samajwadi party ticket.
When asked about the Prime Ministerial face of the Opposition, Shatrughan Sinha said that once they have numbers, they will decide. Elaborating on his answer, he said:
"We have been listening to such questions since childhood, after Nehru who, after Lal Bahadur Shastri who, after Indira who. I am not confused. PM will stand out from the Gathbandhan or mahagathbandhan whatever you call it. It will be from the Opposition. Mr. Modi has no right to question who will be the PM or will not be. Country's PM can be anybody if the person has numbers"
When said that why is he not supporting Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister candidate, he did not express his choice openly but said backed the Opposition saying:
" Ghulam Nabi Azad has not said so, you are putting words in his mouth. Within one year of taking the role of president in Congress party, Rahul Gandhi is a capable person, he has made impossible to possible, taken three state elections despite EVMs.
This is politics and this is no time to decide the prime ministerial candidate. And this is not his job to choose who will be the Prime Minister. It is not the job of media either. Gathbandhan Mahagathbandhan will win."
When asked about the inner tussle between the Yadav brothers in Lalu Prasad Yadav's family and the recent tweet by Tej PRatap Yadav that he misses his father after he was not allowed to speak in Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi's rally in Patliputra, he said:
"Tej Pratap is a wonderful boy, he is attached to brother, so is Tejashwi Yadav is, the face of Bihar. He then said that he wasn't there and so he cannot say what happened and added if there has been a problem we should not discuss it in public." ("Hum to nahi the vaha pe kya hua kise pata")
When asked why his wife Poonam Sinha is contesting from Lucknow on Samajwadi party ticket against BJP's Rajnath Singh, he said in his style:
"Na koi nayi bat, na koi buri bat, na koi badi bat" (It is not a new thing, not a bad thing, not a big thing)
He then added that everybody knows what Rajnath did to him when he was going to be elected for the third time in Rajya Sabha.
"Rajnath Singh did not help me when I was going to be elected for the third time in Rajya Sabha. He promised me on public occasions but he did not give me a chance and chose someone else." (Rajnath Singh ne help nahi kiya jab mai dusri bar se teesri bar aane wala tha. Unhone vachan dia tha, fir bhi unhone kisi aur ko de diya mauka.)
Shatrughan Sinha is contesting on a Congress ticket against BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad from Patna Sahib constituency of Bihar that is said to be a BJP bastion. The constituency goes on polls in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 19. The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be declared on May 23.
