The BJP had lost its majority in the 2017 assembly polls in the state but managed to form a government under the leadership of the late Manohar Parrikar who helped forge an alliance with Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Goa Forward Party (GFP) and some independents. With the demise of former CM Manohar Parikkar, BJP's Pramod Sawant has taken over as the chief minister of Goa.
2019 Lok Sabha elections in Goa: Both NDA and UPA win a seat each in the state
Among the key contestants for the general elections, four-term BJP MP and Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Naik took on state Congress president Girish Chodankar for the North Goa seat, while in South Goa sitting BJP MP Narendra Sawaikar contested against former Chief Minister and Congress candidate Francisco Sardinha.
The death of former CM of Goa, Manohar Parrikar turned tables, a day after which the BJP and its allies decided on Pramod Sawant to be the next Chief Minister, with ally MGP's Sudin Dhavalikar to get a deputy CM post and the same for Goa Forward Party’s Vijai Sardesai. The decision was made after a hectic day-long parlay between the BJP, including union minister Nitin Gadkari, and its allies in the state.
Goa faced controversy last year during Karnataka elections when the Congress cried foul that it had not been invited to form the government in Goa after the February 2017 Assembly polls despite it emerging as the single largest party. It staked claim over the government after Parrikar’s demise but the newly appointed CM Pramod Sawant successfully proved his majority in the assembly. After winning majority test for the BJP-led alliance in the State Assembly, Sawant also said that his party will win all by-elections for the Assembly seats and both the Lok Sabha seats this time. Though AAP did not win any seats in Goa in the 2017 assembly elections, however they contested on the two seats Lok Sabha seats and three seats where by-polls were held.
