The Election Commission has sought a report from Surendranagar Collector after a person slapped Hardik Patel while he was delivering a speech during a Congress rally.

Patel registered a formal police complaint over the shocking physical attack. Hardik's team had been claiming BJP wants to get him killed and has said that the attack was related to this claim.

The Superintendent of Police, Mahendra Bagria at Vadhwan police station has said that the attacker did not belong to BJP. He said, "The attacker was upset that the matrydom of 14 Patidars youths were put to vain during the agitation as he joined a different party. The peace in Gujarat was disturbed. He said that because of Hardik Patidar his wife who was pregnant faced difficulty in reaching the hospital. He does not belong to any party, he is a common man," he said.

The attacker had walked up to Hardik as he was thanking the audience for blessing him by their presence and slapped him hard before he had a chance to react. Following that the two briefly engaged in fisticuffs before the attacker was taken into custody.

The attacker had waited overnight at the rally venue in an effort to blend in, and as a result, the security didn't think to stop him as he made his way to the stage, Hardik Patel's team said.

Hardik Patel had joined the Congress just weeks before the Lok Sabha polls began, finally putting the 3-year-long speculation over his political affiliation to rest. However, his own poll plans were scuppered after the Gujarat High Court refused to stay his conviction in a 2015 rioting case rendering him ineligible. He has subsequently been campaigning for his party, as he was doing at the rally where he was attacked.

The incident comes just weeks after a video of Patel being confronted by citizens over his choice of joining Congress surfaced. In the video, a group of people can be seen questioning him over his political decision and support to the 'Tukde Tukde gang'.
