Hardik Patel has registered a formal police complaint over the shocking physical attack against him while he was addressing a Congress rally in Surendranagar.
Republic TV has accessed visuals of Hardik Patel filing his complaint at the Police station. The complaint follows hot on the heels of the Congress leader being vehemently attacked on stage while he was addressing a rally, by a man who is believed to be called Tarun Gajjar.
As per Hardik Patel's team, the attacker had waited overnight at the rally venue in an effort to blend in, and as a result, the security didn't think to stop him as he made his way to the stage. The man walked up to Hardik as he was thanking the audience for blessing him by their presence and slapped him hard before he had a chance to react. Following that the two briefly engaged in fisticuffs before the attacker was taken into custody.
Hardik's team has also claimed that the attack was a part of a BJP plot to cause him grievous injury.
Hardik Patel had joined the Congress just weeks before the Lok Sabha polls began, finally putting the 3-year-long speculation over his political affiliation to rest. However, his own poll plans were scuppered after the Gujarat High Court refused to stay his conviction in a 2015 rioting case rendering him ineligible. He has subsequently been campaigning for his party, as he was doing at the rally where he was attacked.
The incident comes just weeks after a video of Patel being confronted by citizens over his choice of joining Congress surfaced. In the video, a group of people can be seen questioning him over his political decision and support to the 'Tukde Tukde gang'.
The attack on Hardik Patel follows BJP Rajya Sabha MP GVL Narasimha Rao having a shoe hurled at him while he addressed a news briefing at his party HQ in New Delhi on Thursday.
