With the country headed into the third phase of elections on Tuesday April 23, 117 seats across 15 states and Union territories are in the poll fray. While the ruling BJP won all the 26 seats in Gujarat in the 2014 general elections, the assembly elections in Gujarat in 2017 witnessed a stronger showing by the Congress party.

BJP party chief Amit Shah accompanied the Prime Minister as he cast his vote at Ranip in Ahmedabad shortly after the voting commenced on Tuesday morning, at 7 A.M. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah cast his own vote in the poll booth in Nishan Higher Secondary School in Ranip.

After casting his vote Amit Shah urged all the voters to participate in the largest festival of democracy: 

"Today the country is voting in the third phase of elections. In Gujarat, I will appeal to all the voters that they participate in the largest festival of democracy. In 26 seats of Gujarat, they must go in huge numbers and cast their vote. Your one vote can make the country safe, your one vote can make the country able, your one vote can make the country prosperous, your one vote can take the country to the road of development. I will appeal, especially to the youth and first-time voters, that they will ensure the development and safety of the country, the future of India by casting their vote. Everybody should vote for making democracy successful. I also thank all voters for making the festival of democracy successful."

Gujarat being the home turf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, the contest in the state is more than that of winning seats. BJP president Amit Shah is in the poll fray from the Gandhinagar seat of Gujarat. The seat had for the last two decades been held by BJP senior leader LK Advani. The result of the voting of all the phases will be declared on May 23.
