KEY LEADERS IN FRAY:

Chandigarh, the joint capital of neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana has reposed faith in either BJP or Congress in the past three decades during parliamentary polls. In 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate and outgoing MP, Kirron Kher was locked in a tough poll battle against Congress’ former MP Pawan Kumar Bansal and AAP’s nominee Harmohan Dhawan, a former Union Minister.

CAMPAIGN AND CONTROVERSY:

Actor Anupam Kher held a public rally in support of his wife and sitting BJP MP Kirron Kher. Notably, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat was also present in the rally. In the pictures, Kher and his wife could be seen rallying together amidst a heavy crowd cheering on the road. However, a newspaper reported that his rally was about to get cancelled due to a poor crowd. Responding to the same, the veteran actor said:

"I have done 515 films and all were not hits."

2014 LOK SABHA ELECTIONS:

In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the city had switched loyalty from Congress to BJP making the debutant Kirron Kher victorious against the then sitting MP and Congress’ veteran Pawan Bansal. Even though AAP had in 2014 Lok Sabha polls gave a tough contest to both the mainstream parties, the party has lost its base over the years.

Kirron Kher had a comfortable victory, winning an overwhelming 42.20% votes in the three-cornered fight. Her nearest rival was Pawan Kumar Bansal who was defeated by more than 68 thousand votes.
