The BJP on Thursday released its first list of 184 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections that are scheduled to be held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19. The crucial constituency in the BJP's list was Uttar Pradesh's Amethi for which Union Minister Smriti Irani has been named. It is evident that the seat is all set to turn into a high-pitch political battleground owing to the contest between Smriti Irani and Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The bastion of Congress for decades, Amethi constituency has been contested by the Gandhi family since 1980- with Sanjay Gandhi first, then former PM Rajiv Gandhi, followed by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and now the Prime Minister aspirant, Rahul Gandhi.

However, BJP leader Smriti Irani has been visiting Amethi on several occasion n a bid to boost the developmental process in the constituency, which she accuses the Congress president did not pay much attention to over the past years.

Uttar Pradesh will go into polls in all seven phases, the result of which will be announced on May 23.
