Hours before the fifth phase of elections scheduled on Monday, May 6, poll scuffle in the state of West Bengal has begun. In the video that has been posted by news agency ANI, BJP candidate from Ghatal and former IPS officer Bharti Ghosh alleged that few men (allegedly TMC workers) are threatening people not to cast votes. She went on to say that if they continue she will 'thrash them like dogs'.
West Bengal has been the centre of Poll violence since the first phase of elections. In the video, Ghosh is seen clad in saffron attire, shouting on two men, alleging that they are telling people not to vote. Other people around her are seen capturing the entire incident on their phones. Ghosh says while shouting on the two men:
"You are threatening people, you are telling them not to vote. I will thrash you like dogs, I will call people from Uttar Pradesh and they will beat you, we will drag you out of your homes and will thrash you like dogs. Go home, go run, don't come here, go home, lock yourself. How dare you threaten people not to vote...," Ghosh said in the video posted by ANI.
Ghosh, who used to call WB CM Mamata Banerjee as 'mother' is fielded by the BJP from Ghatal against Trinamool's candidate Deepak Adhikari, an actor popularly known as Dev. Gahtal.
Condemning the incident, WB CM Banerjee said that she has asked her 'candidate not to stoop as low as the opponent'. She also said that Ghosh must 'not cross the laxman rekha,' while campaigning for Dev in Ghatal.
Both the BJP and the Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool has accused each other of perpetrating violence and threatening people against voting in favour of the other. In the fourth phase of the election, in state's Asansol district, Union Minister and BJP leader Babul Supriyo's car was smashed and irregularities were reported while polling was underway. Supriyo, on the other hand, entered a poll booth forcefully and quarreled with poll officers therein. He was later given notice by the EC about the same.
"In West Bengal, voters are being stopped from exercising their franchise. The goons are not allowing the elections to take place peacefully with fairness. Central Forces have not been deployed adequately. We have urged the poll body to take strict action against those who are creating the hurdle to the free and fair elections in the state," BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.
