Lashing out at Priyanka Gandhi over her comments on nationalism, union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday held a press conference and said that 'politics of division was a part of the Congress DNA'.

On Monday, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had made a distinction between martyrs over their religion while attacking the BJP on nationalism at a poll rally. Addressing the media at the BJP's headquarters in New Delhi, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad expressed his anger on her comment connecting nationalism to communal politics, he said:

"Priyanka Gandhi must understand the legacy of the politics. Though I don't take her name often, but when she has started giving us advice on nationalism, I will ask her two questions: If you are so concerned, why is your party prostesting against Triple Talaq? You are a woman and your mother is a woman, you talk about women's empowerment, respect for women, etc, then why is your party protesting Triple Talaq bill? Your party forced us to bring Ordinance on Triple Talaq because they blocked the bill in the Rajya Sabha."

He further went on to talk about the Shah Bano case of 1986, invoking Rajiv Gandhi. The Union Minister said:

"Whose party changed the law during the Shah Bano case? Where had nationalism gone at that time? Now they are protesting against Supreme Court's decision. Moreover, when 22 Islamic nations have banned it, yet they are protesting due to vote-bank. For the sake of vote-bank they will divide."

Bringing in the JNU controversy, Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned as to why Rahul Gandhi addressed the students of JNU after the students were accused of shouting slogans on dividing the country. He further said that the entire Opposition is playing the politics of dividing the country.

"All the Opposition is speaking in the same tone as the Congress. Today Congress' minister in Katihar talked on same lines, BSP's Mayawati was saying the same. In Assam, Badruddin Ajmal says the same and everybody knows who all opposes NRC in Assam and West Bengal and why. In Kashmir the politicians talk on same lines and Mamata Banerjee is calling actors from Bangladesh, everybody understands why."

Clarifying the stance of the BJP on NRC, he added that they will continue to oppose those who are trying to enter the country by illegal means.

He reposed trust in the people of the country and said that they would do justice and give a befitting answer to those who are seeking evidence of sacrifice and valour of martyrs. He then reiterated that the Congress party must not give lessons of nationalism as it is because of the BJP that the issue of national security, national self-confidence and national prospects are in the centre of discourse of the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 campaign.
