Two days after the humbling defeat of the Congress party in the 2019 Lok Sabha election in which it won only 52 seats under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi who himself lost from the Gandhi bastion of Amethi against BJP's Smriti Irani by 55120 votes, a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is being held at the AICC HQ.
It is speculated that the meeting will decide on whether or not Rahul Gandhi will resign owing to the embarrassing defeat of the party. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi arrived at the meeting around 11, followed by Congress' trump-card for the Lok Sabha elections - Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who arrived alongside her brother.
As the meeting was about to commence, Congress leaders across the country arrived at Delhi party office, including former PM Manmohan Singh, PC Chacko, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Shaktisinh Gohil, Rajeev Satav, Jatin Prasada, RPN Singh, PL Punia, Oomen Chandy, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, AK Antony, Mallikarjun Kharge, Kumari Sheilja, Harish Rawat, Sheila Dikshit, P Chidambaram and others.
As the meeting began after 11, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were seen talking to each other while being seated in the conference room along with other leaders. In the visuals, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was seen seated beside Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal was seen seated beside Sonia Gandhi. Former finance minister P Chidambaram was present while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sat beside former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit.
Meanwhile, in the early hours of the day, Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam had brushed aside the speculations of Rahul Gandhi's resignation. In a tweet, he had said that the Congress party lost due to bad luck and they will fight back under the leadership of Gandhi.
