As meme controversy gets bigger in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a poll rally in Bashirhat, West Bengal requested Mamata Banerjee to make a meme of him and to gift him on May 23.
PM Modi in an obvious reference to the arrest of Priyanka Sharma slammed the Mamata Banerjee, saying: "Didi is making situations like emergency in Bengal. The girls whom you are sending to jail will give you a reply. You are so furious on one picture. When a girl just shared a picture, you threw her to jail? Didi you are an artist, just make a picture of me, bad, most disgusting picture and then after 23 when I take the oath of PM, gift me that painting, I will not file FIR against you."
(Jin betiyo ko aap jail me dal rahe hain, vahi betiyan aapko sabak sikhane wali hai. Ye bhumi ma durga ma sarawati ki hai, ek tasveer k liye itna gussa, aap to khud artist ho, mai is manch se aapse aagrah karunga, aapka gussa thanda karne k liye, aap mera gande se gnada, bhadde se bhadda Tasveer baniye aur 23 may ko PM ki shapat le lene k baad, aap mujhe vo gift kijiyege, mai aappe FIR darj nahi karunga.)
On May 11, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) youth wing convenor Priyanka Sharma was arrested at TMC's behest because she shared a meme of Mamata Banerjee on Facebook.
After she was released on Wednesday, she spoke to Republic TV and alleged that the police made her sign an apology forcefully:
"I was forcefully made to apologise, I wasn't allowed to talk to my lawyers and family members. I was made to remain in jail for 18 hours after bail being granted. There is gundaraj in West Bengal. I was arrested for a funny meme because I am from BJP and I am a woman, but other BJP workers are being treated with physical violence. The police just want to please Didi hence they arrested me. I will continue to fight against Mamata Didi's government," Sharma said.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to Sharma arrested for allegedly posting a morphed image of Mamata Banerjee on social media, observing that freedom of speech ends when it infringes upon others' rights.
The Bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna ordered for Sharma’s immediate release. The apex court had observed in the bail plea of Sharma that:
"The detenue, Priyanka Sharma, is directed to be immediately released on bail. The detenue shall, however, at the time of release, tender an apology in writing for putting up/sharing the pictures complained of on her Facebook Account. It is made clear that this order is being made in the special facts and circumstances of this case and shall not operate as a precedent."
