More trouble for Rahul Gandhi: EC issues showcause notice to Congress president over 'anti-tribal law' claim. Details here

The Election Commission on Tuesday has issued a show-cause notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi over his remarks made during a rally in Madhya Pradesh's Shahdol which violates the model code of conduct for 2019 polls. He has been given 48 hours by the poll body to respond on the matter.

At a rally in Madhya Pradesh on April 23, Rahul Gandhi had alleged that Narendra Modi-led NDA government has made a new law allowing officers to shoot adivasis.

"Now Narendra Modi has made a new law. He has made a new law for tribals (Adivasis), and written that the tribals can be shot dead. It is written in the law that tribals will be attacked, your land will be snatched, water will be snatched and now they say that tribals will be shot dead," he said during the Madhya Pradesh rally.

Taking notice of his remarks, the Election Commission issued notice, on May 1, to the Congress president demanding his submit an explanation within 48 hours of the notice, failing which "it will take a decision without further reference to him".

In another controversy earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notice to the Congress president Rahul Gandhi, seeking an explanation in the matter of his citizenship. The Home Ministry, in the notice, requested him to 'intimate the factual position in the matter to the Ministry within a fortnight of the receipt of the notice'.

Later, the Congress president was ordered by the Supreme Court to file a fresh affidavit in the contempt plea case filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi alleging that Gandhi had wrongly attributed the comment 'Chowkidar chor hai' to the SC's order on the Rafale deal. He had expressed "regret" in the Supreme Court for his "chowkidar chor hai" remark on the Rafale review petition order which the apex court had said was "incorrectly attributed" to it.
