The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won a thumping victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by leading in a total of 353 seats in the 17th Lok Sabha (at the moment of publishing), elections for which were held in 7 phases starting April 11 and ending on May 19. The coalition which has been in power at the Centre has easily crossed the halfway mark for the Lok Sabha and is in line to once again form a government, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi all set for another term of five years. It is the largest coalition to set out to form the government.
PM Modi-led NDA in 2014 had 342 seats in the Lok Sabha.
In the election results which were declared on May 23, the Amit Shah-led BJP which is at the helm of the NDA, is currently leading in 301 seats out of the 437 it had contested.
The results are very close to the numbers predicted by Republic Media Network’s exit polls.

As per the projections by the Jan Ki Baat Exit Poll, National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was projected to clinch an estimated seat-share between 295 and 315 in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Out of this, the BJP was predicted to secure an estimated seat-share between 254 and 274, with the 264 median falling eight seats short of the half-way mark. In comparison, in 2014, the BJP had won 282 seats on its own. The Jan Ki Baat exit poll further predicted that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-led by Congress was projected to a win between 122 and 125 seats, with Congress predicted to secure 71 to 74 of these. The remaining non-NDA and non-UPA parties or 'Others' were projected to win 102-125 seats, out of which in the electorally critical state of Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party 'Mahagathbandhan' had been projected to win 21-32 seats (26).
As per the projections by the CVoter Exit Poll, National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was predicted to secure 287 seats - a majority - in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls with 42.3% vote-share. In comparison, in 2014, the NDA had won a sweeping 336 seat share, with BJP alone winning 282 seats on its own.
The CVoter exit poll further predicted that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-led by Congress was projected to clinch only 128 seats - 69 seats more as compared to the UPA's seat-share in 2104 which was 59. The vote-shares projections showed UPA securing 29.6 percent votes in the 2019 polls.
The remaining non-NDA and non-UPA parties or 'Others' were projected to win 127 seats, out of which in the electorally critical state of Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party 'Mahagathbandhan' had been projected to win 40 seats in the state. The 'Others' were projected to clinch a vote-share of 28.1 percent.
Here are the factors in the BJP’s campaign and PM Modi’s governance that helped it achieve stupendous success:
The BJP had driven a campaign around the government and PM Narendra Modi’s accomplishments, regularly speaking about development drives, decisiveness in policymaking, pro-poor schemes, action against corruption, and above all, national security and India’s capability to respond to threats. Specific accomplishments ranged from the many welfare schemes (Ayushman Bharat Yojna, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojna, Ujjwala Yojna, JAM Trinity and several others) to the government’s unprecedented action against terrorism displayed through the Surgical Strike in 2016 and the air strike in 2019 on Pakistan’s terror camps across the LoC following the attacks in Uri and Pulwama respectively.
One of the highlights was the Prime Minister’s speech in Churu, Rajasthan, during a rally just a few hours following the Air Strike in Balakot on February 26 where he spoke about taking the right steps to ensure the nation’s security.
In March, India had also carried out ‘Mission Shakti’ which showed that the country is capable of knocking off satellites in space using an A-Sat missile, becoming just the fourth to be able to do so.
Another huge achievement for the Modi government was the designation of Jaish-e-Mohammed’s chief Masood Ashar as a global terrorist by the United Nations Security Council on May 1. The release of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman two days after he was captured by Pakistan also showed the NDA government’s diplomatic achievements.
The Prime Minister also made pointed criticisms during his speeches in rallies and roadshows across the country, be it calling out the duplicity in the ‘Bua-Bhatija’ coalition between Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party which have been rivals for decades or attacking Mamata Banerjee’s government for the law and order issues in the state and her silence over her party members’ involvement in chit fund scam. He also hit out at the idea of a nationwide ‘Mahagathbandhan’ calling it ‘Mahamilavat’ (adulterated/impure) saying that a coalition without a strong leadership would lead to chaos and confusion making it Majboor (compromised) and not a Majboot (decisive) government, showing the example of the Congress-JD(S) coalition in Karnataka which is barely holding itself together in the state.
He also targeted the Congress for siding with the those who want to ‘break India into pieces’ or the ‘Tukde Tukde gang’. In several of his rallies he questioned the Congress’ stand or lack thereof on national security and the Opposition repeating Pakistan’s line on having talks despite the country not taking responsibility of multiple terror attacks by organisations backed by it. He also reminded the people a list of scams that the Congress party has been accused of - from Bofors during the Rajiv Gandhi era to the 2G scam, and the accusations at Robert Vadra of being involved in a land and money laundering case.
He has often brought up the dynastic rule in the Congress. Calling it the party of ‘Naamdars’ and calling his government ‘Kaamdars’, he compared his achievements in the last five years with that Congress’ fifty years of rule.
To ensure they win by a resounding majority, PM Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah also carefully wove in allies for the National Democratic Alliance. From bringing a miffed Shiv Sena back into the fold by careful negotiations, to clever seat-share formula in Tamil Nadu and Bihar, the BJP leadership ensured that the parties in the NDA were united in ideology and vision for the country. And now the fruition of the BJP endeavour has materialised in the form of a nationwide mandate.
