Following the controversial comment by BJP's Bhopal candidate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur that Mahatma Gandhi assailant 'Nathuram Godse is a patriot', Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hits out at the BJP saying that distancing itself from her comment is not enough.
Taking to Twitter, she asked:
"Bapu's killer is a patriot?" She then wrote the last words of Mahatma Gandhi: 'Hey Ram'
She then slammed the BJP saying that the party should have guts to spell out their stand."
On Thursday, responding to the question of a reporter on Makkal Nidhi Maiyam chief Kamal Haasan's 'independent India's first terrorist was a Hindu' remark in reference to Nathuram Godse, Sadhvi Pragya Thakur asserted that Gode will always remain a "Desh Bhakt" (Patriot).
She went onto add that those who have termed Godse as a terrorist will get a reply from the people in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
"Nathuram Godse was, is and will remain a 'Desh Bhakt'. People calling him a terrorist should instead look within, such people will be given a befitting reply in these elections," Sadhvi Pragya said.
Minutes after Sadhvi Pragya's controversial statement, BJP leader GVL Narasimha Rao addressed media and said:
"We are seeing in the media channels a statement made by Bhopal candidate Sadhvi Pragya Thakur about the Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi ji. We completely disagree with the statement she has made with regard to Mahatma Gandhi and we strongly condemn this particular statement. The party, the BJP will ask as to why she made such a statement to seek or tender a public apology for her, this objectionable statement."
On May 13, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan was addressing a rally wherein he said that free India's first terrorist was a Hindu, in reference to Mahatma Gandhi's assailant Nathuram Godse.
"I am not saying this because this is a Muslim-dominated area," Haasan prefaced his remarks, adding, "but I am saying this before a statue of Gandhi. Free India's first terrorist was a Hindu, his name is Nathuram Godse. There it began."
Meanwhile, the Congress party has called the statement by Sadhvi Pragya an act of treason and Congress Bhopal candidate Digvijaya Singh has demanded an apology from Prime Minister Modi for Sadhvi Pragya's statement. Other opposition parties have also condemned the comment made by Sadhvi Pragya.
