In a big twist amid the rumblings within the Congress party over the tenability of Rahul Gandhi remaining party president following the massive loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, sources have told Republic TV that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has actually sought more powers for her son.

As per inputs, despite the Congress party only winning 52 seats in the elections, an improvement of just six seats as compared to its lowest-ever seat tally of 44 from the 2014 polls, Sonia Gandhi has demanded that Rahul Gandhi, her successor as party chief, gets more control over the party.

The latest development comes shortly after sources told Republic TV that Rahul Gandhi had offered to resign at the CWC meeting in an effort to take responsibility for the election humbling which, among other setbacks, saw the party being completely swept in the states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh where it had only recently formed state governments and Rahul Gandhi personally also losing his Amethi bastion to BJP's Smriti Irani. However, Rahul Gandhi's resignation offer was allegedly turned down by other members of the CWC including Dr Manmohan Singh and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Meanwhile, another faction within the Congress has contended that a change in the party's top leadership is the need of the hour and wants Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to be considered for the role, seeing as other Congress Chief Ministers such as Kamal Nath and Ashok Gehlot have seen their states being completely taken over by the Modi wave even as Punjab gave eight of 13 seats to the Congress.

The CWC meeting, which was held for four hours starting 11 am, saw a number of senior party leaders attending. P Chidambaram, Ashok Gehlot, Siddaramaiah, Captain Amarinder Singh, Ambika Soni, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Miallikarjun Kharge and others.
