A day after BJP released its election manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls 2019, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi targeted the Narendra Modi-led party over its promise to eliminate Article 370 of the Constitution and annul Article 35A if voted to power.

Calling Article 370 a 'bridge' between India and Kashmir, Owaisi argued that the article that gives autonomous status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir cannot be removed from the Constitution. Talking about Article 35A which empowers the Jammu and Kashmir state's legislature to define “permanent resident” of the state, the AIMIM chief claimed that it also cannot be removed while a BJP leader is fighting against its removal in J&K.

"Article 370 cannot be scrapped. It was included in the Constitution which was framed by the people who had more wisdom that Narendra Modi - Pt Nehru, BR Ambedkar and BJP's ideologue Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Sardar Patel were in the cabinet - they all agreed on making the Article 370 a part of the Constitution. It is a bridge. You cannot talk about removing Article 35A when there' a BJP minister in Jammu and Kashmir who himself is fighting a case against its removal in the state. This is their lie and betrayal ahead of the elections," Asaduddin Owaisi said while addressing a briefing in Hyderabad.

Later, hitting out at the BJP over its promise to attempt to draw up a Uniform Civil Code, Owaisi alleged that the Law Commission itself has said that the 'Uniform Civil code cannot be implemented'.

The AIMIM president later asserted that the government cannot touch Article 370 raking up the Naga Framework Agreement of 2015 which signed during the NDA rule.

"The government has been instructed to not touch Article 370 because under Article 370A and 370G Nagaland and Mizoram have been granted special rights. This government (BJP government) has itself signed the Naga Framework Agreement. When you cannot touch Nagaland and Mizoram, how will you touch Article 370A. The problem with BJP is that it does not accept the diversity of the nation," Owaisi added.
