Responding to the Congress manifesto for the 2019 elections that the party released on Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the document is a joke and further evidence of what had gone on during the UPA's tenure on the national security front.
"This is further proof of how during the Congress' time, security was toyed with - this is a similar joke," the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said.
Yogi Adityanath's criticisms come on the back of the Congress making numerous controversial promises in its document relating to national security, such as a revision of AFSPA, a revision of deployment of troops in J&K, the institution of a new post called the Chief Of Defence Staff, giving the NSA's post a statutory backing and making it accountable to Parliament not the PMO, and others.
While the Congress' Manifesto contained as-yet unheard assurances in a wide range of areas, during the event itself, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had mostly focused on his ongoing narratives, including the Rafale deal. On Rahul Gandhi’s remark calling the Prime Minister ‘chor,’ CM Yogi said that the Congress party is spreading lies about citizens who are dedicated, including the PM. He termed PM Narendra Modi as ‘sher’ (Lion) and pure. Lambasting his comment further on Congress’ jibe of ‘Chowkidar chor hai,’ he said that people who looted the resources of the country for so many years are now calling PM Modi as ‘chor.’
"Chowkidar is pure and is a lion. Citizens and people who are dedicated towards their work are being called 'chor' by people who follow the ideals of the Congress party. People who looted the resources of the country for so many years are now calling PM Modi as ‘chor.’ But the citizens of this country know. They will give each and every vote to Modi ji and BJP. They will take revenge from the Congress party for this insult."
On being asked about Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s statement that BJP has spread hatred in the country during their tenure, he said:
"BJP’s tenure of five years has been a matter of pride for the country. There has been political consensus. Cultural nationalism has flourished and development took place without any discrimination. Modi ji said this on May 30, 2014, that our government will work for villages, for poor people, for women, for every strata of the society. We made schemes keeping in mind the 130 crore population of the country. We believe that there should be development for all but no one should be insulted. This can only be done by the BJP and under the able leadership of Modi ji we have achieved it."
The Congress released a 55-page manifesto titled 'Hum Nibhayenge' (We will deliver) with a stated focus on joblessness and farm distress, while leaving the proposals relating to national security unsubstantiated.
