As Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday over the allegations on his Indian citizenship, Cong MLA Randeep Surjewala responded in the matter with a counter-attack at PM Modi and the BJP-led government.

Claiming that the allegations on Rahul Gandhi's citizenship are not 'true', Randeep Surjewala further launched an attack on the Prime Minister alleging that he is resorting to 'fake narrative' to divert attention.

"Why were Prime Minister and his ministry sleeping for five years? The truth is that there is no truth in the allegation. In fact Rahul Gandhi has complained one and half years ago to Ethics Committee of Parliament to take action against BJP leaders, but even they have not responded. Now the truth is out in the open. Modi has no answers for unemployment, Modiji has no answers for agrarian distress, black money, Acche din, tax terrorism unleashed on the traders, and that's why he is resorting to fake narrative which is his typical style through his government's notices to divert attention. But you are facing defeat in the four phases and you will be decisively decimated less by the Congress party, more the people of this country," said the Congress party leader responding in the matter.

Following BJP MP Dr Subramanian Swamy's complaint to the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking clearance in Rahul Gandhi's citizenship, the MHA issued notice to the Congress president to respond within a fortnight in the matter.

"It has been brought out that in the Company named Backops Limited 's Annual Returns filed on 10/10/2005 and 31/10/2006, your date of birth has been given as 19/06/1970 and that you had declared your nationality as British," the Director, Citizenship has written in the notice to Rahul Gandhi.

The development has come 10 days after an independent Lok Sabha candidate from Amethi, Dhruv Lal, submitted an 11-page complaint to Amethi's returning officer, raising objections on the nomination papers of Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Congress President had declared his nationality as "British", in the Memorandum of Association and Annual Return for the period ending 21st August 2005 of a British company, namely Backops Limited, where he allegedly served as a Director.
