WATCH: 'Ran To Kerala Fearing Defeat In Amethi', Says BJP Chief Amit Shah On Rahul Gandhi's Decision To Contest From Two Seats

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah has mocked Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha 2019 polls from two seats
  • Addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP supremo iterated that the Gandhi scion fears defeat to Union Minister Smriti Irani in his stronghold

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah has mocked Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha 2019 polls from two seats, suggesting the Congress president is running away from his bastion - Amethi - sensing defeat.

Addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP supremo iterated that the Gandhi scion fears defeat to Union Minister Smriti Irani in his stronghold, and hence, has decided to stand from a second 'safe' seat.

"Rahul Gandhi ran to Kerala after leaving Amethi. Why has he fled to Kerala? Everyone knows this time around, he will be defeated (in Amethi). That is why, he is going to Kerala where he will play votebank politics," Amit Shah said.

His remarks on the Congress chief comes hours after the grand old party confirmed that Rahul Gandhi, for the first time since joining politics, would be contesting elections from two constituencies.

The party had announced that he would stand in Amethi - from where he is a sitting MP and has won on each occasion since 2004 - earlier this month. And on Sunday, Congress officially announced his candidature in Wayanad.

Former Defence Minister and senior Congress leader AK Antony informed that following the request made by Congress' Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu units, the party considered the idea and asked Rahul Gandhi about it, who went ahead and said yes.

"Finally, he has given his consent, and now I am happy to inform that Rahul Gandhi will contest from Wayanad in Kerala," said AK Antony in the presence of Randeep Surjewala and many other party leaders.

The elder Gandhi sibling had just sneaked past now Union Minister Smriti Irani from Amethi, winning the constituency by just over a lakh votes in 2014. While the Congress celebrated victory, it was a moral victory for the BJP, which put up a tough fight on a seat which usually was one-sided.

Since then, the BJP leader has gone all-out in terms of her own contributions in Amethi over the last five years, holding a series of rallies, with PM Narendra Modi doing the same just weeks earlier at the inauguration of an ordnance manufacturing unit.
