Subramanian Swamy on Saturday spoke about the controversy surrounding Congress president Rahul Gandhi's citizenship, educational qualifications and also his name. An
independent candidate from Amethi, Dhruv Lal, had filed a complaint that there were discrepancies in Gandhi's candidature.

He has alleged that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen, on the basis of a "certificate of incorporation of a company registered in the UK wherein he has declared himself a UK citizen." Other complaints made by him are "Falsity about the Educational Qualifications", "False Declaration as to Identity", "False declaration as to Nationality", "Concealment of Information regarding Ownership of Property situated in the United Kingdom" and "Concealment of Information regarding Profits earned".

BJP MP Swamy spoke on the matter to Republic TV saying that owing to the complaint, Gandhi's nomination will be rejected by Monday. He also spoke about how he came across the documents when he had travelled to Britain in 2015.

"In 2015, when I was in London, I had downloaded British government documents which are Company House documents which showed Rahul Gandhi had created a company called BackOps Ltd of which he was the Managing Director. The documents showed that he was a citizen of Britain. In 2003, 2004 and 2005 show him a British citizen. I sent it to Sumitra Mahajan who is the Speaker and LK Advani who had headed the Ethics Committee. But Advani showed no interest in pursuing it. I  had asked the government to disqualify him as a citizen of India. The lawyer who filed the complaint must have got it in my press conference of 2015 as the documents are Virat Hindustan Sangham's website and available to the government," he said.

"It is illegal but Rahul Gandhi has three citizenships - Indian, Italian and British. The problem is if you are a citizen of another country automatically your Indian citizenship gets cancelled, as per the Indian Constitution... He can't be an Indian citizen if he has British and Italian citizenship at the same time. I downloaded the document and it shows that the document has Rahul Gandhi's signature. He appeared before the Ethics Committee and he did not prove that my document is wrong", he added.

The BJP leader also spoke about the fate of Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha election candidature.

"Under the returning officer under the Representation of People's Act on Monday and will declare Rahul Gandhi's nomination rejected and elections will go on without Rahul Gandhi as a candidate," he said.
