In the race up to the Lok Sabha elections that are scheduled to be held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, the BJP released its first list that includes 182 candidates. The party's central election committee (CEC) met on Wednesday evening as a part of its deliberations to consolidate the candidate list.
Contending from West Bengal's Asansol constituency, Union Minister told Republic TV that the party is aware of the 'anti-incumbency and anger' towards Mamata Banerjee's TMC. He further shared that BJP has a target to win 22-23 seats out of the 42 seats from the state.
He said, "We are not complacent, but we know about the super anti-incumbency coupled with the anger people of West Bengal have towards Mamata Banerjee and the absolute killing of democracy that has happened over there. So, I am confident about my area and I am very confident about the target that Amit Shah ji has set for us about 22-23 seats from West Bengal. We are going to ensure that democracy is restored and that people get out and vote, if that happens you can expect a very unexpected result."
Further elaborating on the announced list of 184 candidates, he sends it sends out the 'mood' of the country and that BJP-led NDA party's work has just begun.
He said, "It sends out the mood of the country, that despite all the lies that Rahul Gandhi is coming up with everything is unfolding whether it is the economic fugitives coming down. The work has just started, he has led the country to a great direction and they say when you are walking the right path, you should just continue walking. And all the Ministers who have done well have been rewarded and the confidence level is absolutely very high, the positivity is absolutely very high. And that's why you have Amit Shah ji fighting from Gandhinagar, that sets up the mood.
In West Bengal, BJP will also be contending Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's grand nephew, Chandra Kumar Bose from South Kolkata constituency.
On Wednesday, the party held its the third CEC meeting which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and found party president Amit Shah, and Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley in attendance.
The Congress has already announced candidates for 146 Lok Sabha constituencies so far. The deadline to file the nominations is March 25.
