Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has slammed Congress president Rahul Gandhi for the 'Garibi Hatao Scheme' implying it is a political gimmick.

"You must have heard Rahul Gandhi's statement yesterday, He said every poor person will be given Rs 72000 per year. What were they doing from 2004 to 2014?"

On March 25, Gandhi announced in New Delhi that Rs 72,000 per year will be given as minimum income to poor families, benefiting around 25 crore people, if his party is voted to power in Lok Sabha polls.

On Wednesday, Congress will be fielding former Finance Minister P Chidambaram to brief the media on the proposed scheme by the party.

Addressing a rally in Suratgarh town of Ganganagar district on Tuesday, a day after declaring his party would roll out the scheme if voted to power, Gandhi alleged that Prime Minster Narendra Modi gave money to the rich and top industrialists of the country, but the Congress would serve the poor.

He said the promised minimum income scheme was a "big bang".

"Dhamaka hai ye...bomb fatega (It's a big bang...a bomb will set off). This is a Congress's surgical strike on poverty. They (the BJP) worked to eliminate the poor we will eliminate poverty," Gandhi said.

On helping the poor, he said, "We thought how it should be done. After discussion and brainstorming, we thought that there should be a minimum income line of Rs. 12,000 per month. Soon after formation of the Congress government in 2019, the minimum income line in India will be Rs 12,000 per month."

Meanwhile, Union Minister Arun Jaitley has dissected Congress party's renewed 'Garibi Hatao' vow pg giving Rs. 72,000 per year to the poor as Minimum Income Guarantee Scheme.

In a blog post titled- 'Is Prime Minister Narendra Modi Already Giving to Poor Much More Than What the Congress Promises?'--- Union Minister elaborated on the failures of the Congress party of their seven decades of governance in eradicating poverty. The same blog speaks of how Prime Minister Modi has 'supported the poor' in contrast to the Congress government.
