With comments loaded with personal remarks and spewing hate becoming the flavour of the election season, Karnataka Congress chief Gundu Rao has stirred a controversy by comparing Hindutva to a "communal drug".

Rao while attacking PM Narendra Modi by saying that he has not spoken about what his government in Centre has achieved and has spoken about Hindu Terror, the KPCC chief said that the BJP is communalizing the people using "Hindutva as a drug".

'They're back to communal politics. Prime Minister is back to using communal politics. He was elected on agenda of development. Based on the Gujarat model, he became the Prime Minister. But what is his message today? He should've told us 'we have brought acchhe din'. He should have told us 'we have achieved the following and in this sector'. Instead, he's talking about everything else and has made it communal. He spoke about Hindu Terror. They're dividing using such issues. He even gave a communal twist to Rahul Gandhi contesting from Wayanad. Their intention is to play with the feelings of the people. It's their single point agenda. Hindutva is like a drug, like opium, they are using communal opium with people to avoid the real issues", he said.

BJP's S Prakash reacted saying, "What about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi who were on temple run at the time of the elections. Overnight, Rahul became janeudhari What message is Congress sending to voters. Congress' own leaders are trying to win Hindu voters. Being a KPCC chief is expected to be responsible comments."

The comment by Rao comes after PM Narendra Modi on Monday launched a scathing attack at the Congress' UPA-era 'Hindu terror' charge. It was the first time in recent memory that Narendra Modi has directly addressed the bogey that was coined by the earlier UPA government.

"On the crores of people living in this country, the blotch of 'Hindu terror' has been put by Congress. You tell me, when you heard the term 'Hindu terror' did it not hurt you all? In the history of 1,000 years, have the Hindus ever committed a terrorist act? Is there even a single incident? Even the British, the colonisers, never said that the Hindus could be terrorists. Our culture is more than 5,000 years old, who has tried to defame it? Who coined the term, 'Hindu terror'? Who committed this sin of calling the Hindus terrorists?'
