A day after the last phase of Lok Sabha election ended and exit polls were declared on May 19 projected a second term for NDA under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Karnataka Chief Minister has said that the constant question by the media on the running on JD(S)-Congress government is ridiculous and suggested that there should be a law to bind media.

Speaking on Monday, May 20, H D Kumaraswamy questioned that who is the media trying to help by misusing the name of JD(S) Congress government. He slammed the media by asking as to who gave the media an authority to portray the government in Karnataka humorously. He also added that he is thinking of bringing a law against the media.

This comes after Kumaraswamy attempted to bridge the rift between the warring coalition of Congress and the JD(S) on May 18. He asked the leaders of both parties to restrain from making controversial statements since they (Opposition) are attempting to form a new Central Government. He also added that leaders must restrain from comments that may hamper their efforts to form a non-BJP government at the Centre.

Taking to Twitter he had said:

Commenting on his statement about media, Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao said that there is a need for 'free media' and 'it should not be used for the promoting one party'.

"See media should be well accountable to itself, we need a free media. Media's role, the way its project news is also to be put on question, need for greater transparency of media, should not be used for specific purpose or promote a party, I don't say there should be a legislation but Government interfere is also not correct but media should be accountable," Rao said.

The Congress and JD(S) coalition, which won 117 seats combined, is currently in power in the Karnataka State Assembly managing a slim margin over the BJP's 104 seats, they have entered a seat-sharing pact for the Lok Sabha elections.
