His breakdown created controversy as Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment and Republic Party of India supremo Ramdas Athawale claimed while talking to Republic TV's Editor-In-Chief Arnab Goswami that he has offered Kumaraswamy to join the BJP if he is unhappy with the alliance with Congress. He also said:

"He is the Chief Minister and is now crying because he's disturbed of the Congress party but if he joins the BJP he will become the deputy Chief Minister then he will not cry. There are some problems, and Congress party is not fully supporting him and Congress is thinking they are in majority and JDS is in minority."

Further in his interview, comparing his father's tenure with that of PM Modi's, he said:

"You can go through the record to see what happened in Deve Gowda's 10 month and five years under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. When my father was the PM, was there any terrorist activity in the country? The entire country was calm at that time. There was no clash between India and Pakistan. There was not a single blast in Jammu and Kashmir. Even inside the country, there was no bomb attack."

Reiterating his and his son Nikhil's pro-dynasty stance on Thursday as Karnataka went to polls in Phase 2 of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections,Kumaraswamy said that people want their (his own) family and therefore they are joining politics.

"People want us. They are demanding our family members to contest. This is not dynastic issue. If people want our leadership, they will accept. Otherwise, they will reject us. It is because of the pressure from the people and party workers we have fielded our family members in the poll."

Karnataka's final phase of polling will take place on April 23, while the first phase of polling took place on April 18. The counting of all the seats will take place on May 23.
