Raking up a political controversy ahead of the Karnataka Lok Sabha polls, a video has been posted by BJP Karnataka on Thursday in which the Karnataka Chief Minister and JD (S) Chief, H.D Kumaraswamy has been heard saying that ‘some youths who cannot afford two square meals a day are joining the Army.’ at arally in Madduru, Karnataka. The BJP has hit out at him for insulting the forces and asked him to send his son to join the Army rather than contesting for polls.

In response to this allegation by the BJP that he was insulting the armed forces, Kumaraswamy has hit out saying that BJP was up to their own dirty tricks and that the video was taken out of context. He clarified in a tweet saying that he had commented on the Prime Minister for playing with the lives of some Jawans who were from lower economic backgrounds for the sake of votes. He also added that he did not imply that Jawans were joining the Army for the sake of livelihood. Dismissing the video as a false interpretation aimed to malign him, he wrote:

In the video posted by BJP, the Chief Minister is heard saying:

“The soldiers who guard our borders are not born with a silver spoon. Some youths who are unemployed and who cannot afford two square meals a day are joining the Army. This Prime Minister is playing with their lives.”

Karnataka is set to vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in two phases. On April 18, the state will vote for 18 constituencies while on April 23 the remaining 14 polls will go to polls. Lok Sabha polling will take place in seven phases for all the 29 states and seven Union Territories beginning from April 11 to May 7, 2019. The results will be announced on May 23, 2019.
