Following the Congress party's confirmation of Rahul Gandhi contesting his second seat from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala, apart from his bastion Amethi, the left-front, the Communist Party India (M) has claimed to work to defeat the Congress president.

Senior CPI leader, Prakash Karat stated that this decision of Rahul Gandhi to fight from Wayanad shows that their 'priority' is to fight the 'Left' in Kerala instead of their national committment to fight the BJP.

He said, "Decision of Congress to field Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad shows their priority now is to fight against Left in Kerala. It goes against Congress' national commitment to fight BJP, as in Kerala it's LDF which is the main force fighting BJP there."

Further 'strongly' opposing this move, the CPI (M) leader further stated that they will 'ensure' to defeat the Prime Ministerial aspirant.

He said, "To pick a candidate like Rahul Gandhi against Left means that Congress is going to target the Left in Kerala. This is something which we will strongly oppose and in this election we will work to ensure the defeat of Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad."

Reports had suggested that the grand old party was contemplating making the Gandhi scion contest from a 'safe' second seat, owing to the fear of losing from Amethi to Union Minister Smriti Irani, who had ran the elder Gandhi sibling close last time around.

And on Sunday, the Congress party confirmed this development through a press conference, announcing that Rahul Gandhi has accepted party workers' request to fight from South as well.

However as per the projections of the National Approval Ratings of the month of March the UPA (Congress+UDF) is projected to win 17 seats out of 20 in the states. the LDF is likely to win 3 seats, leaving no seats for the NDA.

Considering the fact that Sabarimala has been a core issue in Kerala, where both BJP and Congress have stood with devotees against the Supreme Court's verdict permitting women aged 10-50 to offer prayers at the temple for the first time in centuries, the saffron party is projected to have been unable to make a mark.
