Discussing the key battle for the Wayanad constituency, between Congress president Rahul Gandhi, CPI's P P Suneer and NDA's Thushar Vellapally, Jan Ki Baat on Monday, has predicted that Gandhi will comfortably win the seat which is a stronghold of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

According to Jan ki Baat the factors working in favour for Gandhi in Wayanad are:

  • The minority equation comes into play as Muslims dominate the area comprising of 49% of the population.
  • The seat which is a Congress stronghold was won by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president MI Shanavas in 2014 Lok Sabha.

Historical trend for Wayanad:

While it is considered a safe seat for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Congress is taking no chance and has fielded its chief Rahul Gandhi to fill the vacuum created due to the death of M I Shanavas.

In the two Lok Sabha elections witnessed by the constituency, Congress has won with a thumping majority. In the 2014 elections, Shanavas had won over CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri by a margin of 20,870 votes, a far reduced number from 2009 when he had defeated M. Rahmathulla of the Communist Party of India (CPI) by a margin of 1,53,439 votes

Republic Double Exit Poll For Kerala: UPA Projected To Deliver Big Blow To Left Says CVoter, BJP May Get Its Name On The Scoreboard Says Jan Ki Baat

Jan ki Baat's projections for Kerala are:

Seat share range projection:

UDF: 14-16
LDF: 4-5
BJP: 2

While Jan Ki Baat projects that the trend would repeat where the major players remain to be the Congress and the Left parties, with the Congress-led UDF likely to be taking the lead, the BJP is also projected to make inroads into the state which has never had an NDA Lok Sabha MP. The crucial factor to note is that both the NDA and the Congress stood with devotees against the Supreme Court's verdict in the Sabarimala case permitting women aged 10-50 years to offer prayers at the temple for the first time in centuries.
