Congress leader Randeep Surjewala on Saturday confirmed that Congress president Rahul Gandhi is considering about contesting from Wayanad in Kerala.
Republic TV had earlier reported that about the grand old party was mulling to make Gandhi contest from Wayanad in Kerala, fearing defeat in the hands of the Union Minister in Amethi -- a bastion of the Gandhis and Rahul himself.
Surjewala spoke about the speculations saying:
"KPCC has sent in their desire and request that Congress president should contest there, we thank them for their effort and expression of their love, the Congress president will positively consider it."
As per sources, the grand old party's Kerala unit is considering to replace MI Shanavas, who had won the Lok Sabha 2014 polls from the constituency and has withdrawn his candidature for the upcoming elections at the last moment, in favor of the Gandhi scion.
Rahul Gandhi, a three-time MP from Amethi, had just eeked past now Union Minister Smriti Irani, winning the constituency by just over a lakh votes.
Though, considering the BJP leader has gone all out attack for the seat this time around, which has seen her hold series of rallies and PM Narendra Modi doing the same earlier this year, the Congress, anticipating an embarrassing defeat, is planning another safe seat for its party chief.
Gandhi's candidature from Wayanad will energise the Congress party in South India and thus the party can win majority of seats from the region, the leaders said.
The Congress had earlier proposed T Siddique, the Kozhikode DCC president, for the Wayanad seat but he has backed out. Siddique said he also wants Gandhi to contest from the Wayanad seat. The election convention of the party-led UDF for Wayanad constituency will unanimously urge Gandhi to contest from the seat, he added.
The Congress state units in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have also demanded that the party president contest the Lok Sabha elections from the respective states. The Congress earlier this month had announced that Rahul Gandhi will contest from his bastion Amethi and Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli.
